Would you ever want to run a large company?”

  • And my gut response is "Ugh. NO." Big companies, from what I've seen, eat you alive. But maybe I'm wrong? Or maybe if you're cut out for the job, you don't let it eat you alive? Or maybe you let it, because you love it? But for me? A strong no.

  • Interestng question. I used to think so (just quit my VP-level job recently) but now that I am freelancing and getting to do all the parts of my job I loved and not do all the parts I disliked, I think it might be hard to go back. It was is so much harder to balance work and family when you are in a mgmt postion. When you are an upper level manager, all the careers, paychecks, etc of the employees are in your hands too. It was just too much responsiblity to allow a 40-hour work week (or even close). This doesn't even count all travel, late-night dinners, networking, etc that comes with that territory. Even if I enjoyed all of that, I fear it would take too much of a toll on my family to be worth it to me anymore. But who knows, maybe my ambition will creep back in again when my baby is older...

  • YES! Here's hoping that's what my company becomes. I would be happy with any level of success of course, but here's hoping it just keeps growing.

  • KathyHowe - you rock, that's just that. Oh, and as for me, no way. Been near there, thought of doing that - and ran away to do something very different.

  • No thanks, I'll work for the person running the large company :-). I've dodged the CFO slot a couple of times, and I'm pretty sure I'm not CEO material - I'm too intimidated about being the one with whom the buck stops, I guess. Maybe for a little tiny company - if I ever figure out what I'd like to do in that niche - but not for a big one.

  • When I think of all of the headaches, I hesitate. But, yes, I would. I have to admit, I am ambitious, and the money and the power both appeal to me. I have fantasies about turning my company into a big corporation. We shall rule the medical editing world! Of course, I haven't put in the travel or hours that would require. But my gut reaction to this question was, "Yes."
