We are being hit hard by the economic slump in our area. I work in a town where more than 2000 jobs are being cut due to the loss of a business, and where several smaller workplaces are facing cutbacks or closure, due to buyouts or bankruptcy. On top of the concerns we have regarding "security" with our current employers, with higher fuel and grocery costs, the Hubby and I are feeling the pinch in a huge way. How are you handling the economic slump? Are you worried? Have you had to make sacrifices in your budget, yet? What is happening in your area?”

  • I actually work from home so I thankfully don't have to deal with the cut backs and gas prices. You will be amazed at how many people have deicided to work from home either part time or full time to bring in extra income and are working to eventually replace their outside income altogether. If you want more info about what I do visit my website at www.mycareerpays.com .

  • I am directly affected by it too. I work in the real estate industry closing the transactions. I get commission on those deals but do rely on closing some of my own in order to bring my income up to a decent level. As I'm sure you can imagine, my pay has gone down since I returned from maternity leave since there is virtually nothing closing. I live in Miami which is one of the hardest hit for the housing market. All the driving that I have done to try to make money has simply resulted in wasting precious, highly priced gas. Food is through the roof and I am trying to shop at Walmart for our groceries but the time that Walmart takes due to the crowds just isn't possible most weeks. It's usually a 2-3 hour ordeal any time of day that you go. On the weekends, we save money by doing free stuff like going to the beach. It's my favorite thing to do and its free so it works out perfectly. But we are stressed. Our food and our gas has gone up tremendously, we have a baby and both of our paychecks have dropped. Right now, I am seeing things pick up here for me at work a bit so that is encouraging. If things remain this slow for another year or so, I probably won't have a job at all, though!

  • We're watching our budget. I'm lucky - my job is secure, although my workload increases with budget cuts. I expanded my garden, which helps with groceries, and started riding my bike more and using the car less.
