Nanny questions - We are going to let our Nanny go on Thursday. She has lost our confidence and while the boys are safe with her I no longer like her. We have had performance conversations so this won't come out of the blue for her. I feel mildly bad about the timing of this coming so close to the holidays, but I just don't want her in our lives anymore and I can't hold out another 3 weeks. My question is should we pay her severance? We will pay her for a full week, but should I give her partial weeks till the end of the year? My gut says no, but I'd love to hear what you've done or would do. Thanks”

  • I had to let an employee go the Monday before Thanksgiving. I felt horrible about it, but the guy left me no choice. He was given plenty of opportunities of correct his behavior. I paid him the salary I owed him plus a small severance. In spite of how much he deserved to lose his job I did feel bad about it being at Christmas time. Even if he were to get another job right away, I knew it would still be hard for him.

  • Thanks for the advice. We are going to pay her through the week. I have not told our boys yet (4 and 2.5) because I don't want them saying something - which they would. I honestly don't think they will mind the change. They haven't bonded with her like they did our last nanny. I just hate this.

  • Unless she is being let go due to something like stealing, harming the kids, or seriously abusing your home, I'd pay enough to get her through the holidays. Well, unless she's only been with your family a short while.

  • First of all, I know this is difficult so hang in there. All I can say is been there, several times.
I think re payment question it really depends on how long she has been with you. I've let one nanny go and she was with us for over a year - I did pay her some severance.

  • Nope. I wouldnt.
I would pay her until the weeks end.
and I would give the kids ample time to say goodbye or to make her a going away present.
not sure of the situation, or their ages. just my .02
