I am actually just curious on how everyone's family operates with their children's schedules. We have a pretty regular schedule for naps and sleeping but on holidays (4th of July, New Years, Halloween, etc) our son stays up late so we can do fun holiday activities such as parades, fireworks, etc. I have some friends who do the same and I have other friends who stick to their schedules no matter what the occasion is. How do your families operate? Strict no matter what or some leeway for special occasions?”

  • I usually give them leeway during special occasions. I want them to enjoy the holidays

  • No, we definitely allow for "late" nights on special occasions. Well, let me caveat that by saying, based on our daughter's mood. If she seems overly tired/cranky, we will cut the festivities short.

  • We have a pretty regular schedule, mainly due to work and school. We try to stick to it on weekends but I have a kid who likes to push his limits if there is something fun going so I let him. He will get cranky the next day but i put him down early the next day for a nap. But its not a regular thing, like I dont let him stay up if we are just home doing nothing.

  • My kids have always been pretty tough (or should I say, mellow). We have a regular schedule but we can diverge from it in major ways if the occasion calls for it. It is very rare for us to have a problem during a late-night activity, though sometimes we have crankiness the next day. If the girls are having a rough following day, they will likely go cop a nap rather than continue a downhill spiral. (Wish I could do that!)

  • a little of both. If I think he can handle it, I let him stay up, i push the envelope, it is a crapshoot, sometimes I escape the crankies, other times his head spins around and he spits pea soup. I also try not to plan back to back things, I give him a break the next day, expect a few more time outs to happen while he gets back into routine.
