Having Thanksgiving at our house...no dishwasher and not enough help if do everything here. Love having Thanksgiving over my daughter & son-in-laws house.
I don't really cook, so it's a no-brainer for me. My whole family converges on my parents. Some cook there, some cook and bring; I bring the wine and clean up afterwards! (Though I don't clean as quickly or completely as I used to before I had kids!) Someday I suppose we will all have to have Thanksgiving somewhere else. But with five siblings, hopefully I can escape the hosting (or at least the cooking) until one of my kids develops a liking for cooking. Surely one of them will, right?
Traveling was definitely more stressful. Like Daisygirl, we shlepped our baby girl around for two years from 8am to 11pm every Thanksgiving and Christmas through various family members' celebrations. Then we moved across the country and family now comes to visit us and it's much easier! With a larger house, and low cleaning expectations, it's now fun and less stress, as we all can help with decorating and cooking under one roof! And our daughter loves all the attention.
Traveling to other family members. I live in a small apartment and we always, for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, have to go out and make a tour with our now 2 year old son. Not fun. I would love it if I had a huge house to have all of our family over at once. Get it done and out of the way and be in the comfort of my own place for once. Cooking is not an issue. Decorating is fun to me and being a hostess has always been something I could do well.
Hosting. I have to clean the house, but really, it just gives me a reason to do what I should already.
But I don't have to worry about travelling in the snow, or porting hot food or trying to keep the bread from collapsing in the cold.
